Every kbb engagement follows the same proven arc — refined over twelve years and more than fifty engagements. Diagnose deeply, design rigorously, build alongside, transfer completely. The methodology is what produces our clients' results — and what makes those results durable.
We begin every engagement with a structured diagnostic. Stakeholder interviews with leadership, board, and senior staff. A rigorous donor-file analysis. A review of every major gift over a meaningful threshold. A tech-stack and process audit. Confidential conversations with three to five top donors when appropriate.
Most engagements surface findings the leadership team didn’t know — and that changes the work. We won’t recommend a strategy until we deeply understand the operation we’re strategizing about.
Once the diagnostic is complete, we design the engagement architecture: the specific work streams, the sequence, the people involved, the metrics we’ll track, and the explicit handoff plan. Every kbb engagement has a defined endpoint from day one — a date when we will no longer be in the building.
Design is collaborative. The plan we agree on is the plan we execute — and your team’s buy-in to the design is what makes the execution actually work.
This is where most consulting engagements quietly fail. The plan gets handed off; the consultant disappears; the team is left to implement on top of their day jobs. kbb does not work this way.
We embed. We sit at your conference table on Tuesday mornings. We coach donor conversations live. We rebuild the moves-management system together with your DOD. We attend the board meetings. We answer the late-Friday text. The work gets done because we’re still in the room until it does.
The closing phase is where we earn our reputation. Documentation gets written and tested. Key processes run for several cycles without our intervention to prove they’re truly owned by the team. The DOD runs board meetings without our presence. The development team closes major gifts without our involvement.
By the time we exit, your operation is materially stronger than when we arrived — and your team owns it. That’s the deliverable that matters.
Every kbb consultant has personally led a major development operation. We don’t use junior staff. The principal who pitches you is the principal who serves you.
Beautiful strategic plans that nobody implements are not our product. We sit alongside your team and ship the work in real time, while you’re learning to do it yourself.
We are not a permanent fixture in your organization. The engagement is scoped, dated, and ended. If we’re still around eighteen months later, something has gone wrong.
Every engagement produces an operating manual your team will actually use — not a polished consulting binder. Plain language, written for the people who will do the work.
If your campaign goal is too aspirational, we will say so. If your DOD needs to be replaced, we will say so. Our willingness to tell hard truths early is why our clients win later.
The infrastructure we build keeps working. Our typical client raises 20–40% more in the year following our engagement than during it — and continues to grow.
— Let's Build What's Next —
Every engagement begins with a no-cost consultation. Share your goals, your context, and the outcomes that matter most. We'll listen carefully, ask the questions that surface the real story, and give you a candid read on the work ahead.
